How to Find a Wedding Photographer

How to Find a Wedding Photographer for Your Special Day

Hiring a wedding photographer is something that you do not want to take lightly. There are so many things to consider when hiring one so I would love to help be a resource.

Just because someone knows how to use a DSLR camera doesn’t mean they know how to photograph a wedding day.  Here are a few things to keep in mind when choosing a wedding day photographer.

What do other couples say about them?

Reading reviews on your photographer is a great way to see what other couples have experienced on their wedding day.  This may help give you confidence that they have the approach and style that you are looking for. Photographer reviews can be found on several websites.  TheKnot.com, weddingwire.com, yelp.com are all great places to start.  You can also use sites like Facebook or Google Business to check for reviews and rankings.

Using  reviews and testimonials to make planning your wedding much less stressful.

Experience in the Field – How Much Do They Have?

It is worthwhile to note the number of years the photographer has been working in the wedding industry. Photography is something that gets better with experience. One must also bring creativity into the mix. When a photographer has a wide array of experience and a portfolio to prove it, you should add them to your list!

In addition to connecting with their creative and artistic vision, you want to make sure they are well versed in the technical side of things.  With the technical skills, the photographer will be able to ensure that the photos are captured with the correct exposure, resulting in well-lit images, no matter how the lighting situation is and what time of the day it is.

On the other hand, having creative skills will ensure that your photographer approaches each shot with an exceptional viewpoint and an artistic vision so that your pictures come out beautifully.

Do your personalities mesh?

Something else super important to consider is personality.  Your photographer will be one of the vendors you spend most of the day with so you want to make sure there isn’t a clash.  You might also want to know how well they interact with guests at a wedding. In addition to being honest, personable, and professional, do you want a photographer who is outgoing, charismatic and fun?  Formal, reserved, type-A? Personality along with experience is a huge factor to consider.

Style of Photography – What look and style are you going for?

When looking for photographers, you will find there are various styles and each photographer will have their unique viewpoint.  Do you want the light, bright and airy look or the dark, contrast and moody? Do you want your photographs to be classic, traditional and formal or more candid, intimate and documentary?  The photographer’s website will be a good place to start but you should also look to see their social media sites as well. Instagram and Facebook are two great resources to see their latest work.

How Many Assistants Will the Photographer Have?

Quite a few people wonder why a photographer will need an assistant. So many things happen on the day of a wedding that it is virtually impossible to capture everything with just one photographer.  The second shooter will be able to cover the reaction shots from family, friends, guests, etc. while the main shooter focuses on the couple.

Second shooters and assistants can help keep things in order with the timeline.  While you are taking your couples portraits, the assistant can be gathering and placing the wedding party or family for formal photos.

These are just a few things to consider when looking for the best photographer for your wedding. Whether it’s one week after your wedding or 50 long years down the road, these priceless images are here to last.

It’s always better to spend on quality rather than the quantity of the images and that might come at a price. Research is one of the most important things you should do. When you make a decision, it is really important that you think through the final decision and choose someone that feels right– after all, the moments are not going to happen again!
